THE "BASIC BIBLE"

EVANGELISTIC SYSTEM

by Daniel B. Lyle, Ph.D

AIM

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ was born into this world to lead us to God (John 14:6).  This is the central message that Christians wish to communicate to non-Christians, that Jesus is the path through which we can come into the presence of God.

Avoiding/escaping many problems and heartaches through shunning sin is part of the message.  Finding relative peace and happiness through doing good and being good is also part of the message.  Giving unselfishly that we in the end might receive far more for ourselves is another part of the message.  Coming into the bright, warm light of Christian Love is also a critical part of the message.  But the picture that overwhelms all of that is Jesus as a golden, shining Door (John 10:9)---through which we enter into God.

APPEAL OF THE AIM

This is not a popular message.

Avoiding or solving problems is ok.  Being happy is ok.  Lighting up our inward selves with real Love is fine.  Even giving unselfishly that we might in the end receive back unselfish gifts from other people is acceptable.  But being brought face-to-face with God is a whole different thing.

God is inconceivably vast and inconceivably powerful.  Next to God we are but specks on a tiny rock circling a spot of light amongst trillions of spots of lights.  Facing God is a crushing blow to our vanity and pride.  We are confronted with our own abject weakness and physical mortality.  The pleasures of the moment we deem so dear are also jeopardized.  Suddenly we must acknowledge and accept a greater Authority than ourselves.  And we are forced to look past the moment to see our own physical death rushing upon us.  This is terrifying.

Jesus brings God down to our level.  So that we can look at God (John 14:9) and not be psychologically or physically burnt to a crisp.  Through Jesus we can see and understand the god who is our "Daddy," who gave us the gift of life, who would gather us up in His strong arms and lift us up to new heights---hugging us and keeping us happy and safe forever.

GENERAL APPROACH

There are many ways to try and communicate this message to our friends and neighbors.  The "Basic Bible Evangelistic System" points out a number of these good ways, and workable tools that we might use.  All of us who are Christians would like to show Jesus to our friends and neighbors, if only the circumstance were right and appropriate methods and tools were available.

Over a twenty-year period I searched and pondered over ways to help the "ordinary" Christian be directly, happily involved in personal evangelism.  This Manual summarizes techniques and tools for helping many individuals in a congregation participate in bringing their friends, relatives, and neighbors to our loving God.

This system takes many of the problems and roadblocks out of the way that prevent the "ordinary" Christian from being directly involved in personal evangelism, provides specific tools that get us easily and enjoyably deep into the most important teachings of the Bible, establishes a strong support-structure to nurture the work, and constantly strengthens and expands the overall effort.  In this way the hands of the minister or trained personal-evangelist can be multiplied-out ten, twenty-fold, or more.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

The "Basic Bible Evangelist System" describes in detail how to do the following:

1)  facilitators identify a pool of people interested in conducting personal Bible study, or in helping with studies, or in providing homes for studies;

2)  with the congregation's active help, facilitators identify and prioritize people possibly interested in personal Bible study, starting with close family and friends;

3)  facilitators schedule visits with those prospects, visit with them to determine their particular needs and interests, maintain easy record keeping of the visits, and schedule studies with those who'd like such;

4)  facilitators then match up a pair of teachers with an interested prospect, making the most compatible match possible;  and

5)  facilitators help in starting and continuing the studies, providing any needed tools and techniques, advice, and back-up Bible knowledge.

Using this system, then, the congregation will have a continuing, ongoing search for friends and neighbors interested in learning more about Jesus and New Testament Christianity.  Friendly, personal visits will be continually scheduled and conducted with individuals interested in what your congregation has to offer.  When people are identified that would like to learn more about the Bible, a process will already be in place for matching them up with compatible people in the congregation for enjoyable studies at their convenience.  Studies will be relaxed, enjoyable, using whatever good tools are appropriate, starting at whatever level the person is at in regards to their knowledge of the Bible, and targeted to that person's individual needs.

CONCLUSION

The message we have is clear.  It is also extremely powerful.  Our friends and neighbors need to hear this message.  Most will not be interested.  But some will, and a percentage of them will eagerly accept the Good News.

When an excellent support system is in place---providing needed training and tools, taking out the way roadblocks and problems, and providing a variety of different good opportunities to be a part of helping others know Jesus and through him God---members of the congregation will  see "evangelism" not as a scary, painful task of confronting other people, but as a deeply enjoyable pursuit to help other people in ways that those people will agree are helpful.  This is something that members of a congregation will not have to be driven by guilt to participate in, but will do so eagerly.

The methods and procedures suggested in this Manual are only that, suggestions.  They are not designed to stop or replace other outreach approaches, merely to compliment and supplement your existing fine efforts.  Please modify or adapt what I suggest in whatever way is helpful to you.  Even "Basic Bible: Christ and His Church" is not a required part of this system.  Other good types and methods of teaching the Bible can easily be used in this system.  Indeed, a number of other supplemental tools and techniques are discussed in the Manual.   Not everyone in the congregation will want to or be able to help out in this evangelistic approach, but some will find this system to be of tremendous help---not only in reaching out to others, but in making one's own Christianity that much more meaningful and enjoyable.
