This manual gives you step-by-step procedures that can help you set up an enjoyable, effective Personal Evangelism Program for your congregation which constantly expands and grow.
Key features of this system are as follows:
A team or teams of "Facilitators" have as their main Church job to continually be going around recruiting more teachers, more students, getting studies started, then checking-in with students and teachers to keep the studies on-track. (Thus the program is constantly being reinforced and expanded.)
Their appeal to both potential teachers and potential students is both personal and specific. (Thus a high rate of positive response.)
The Facilitators take out of the way the hard things that make most people reluctant to become involved in personal evangelism as either teachers or students. (Thus an enthusiastic response to do something both teachers and students would want to do if only the circumstances were proper.)
The Facilitators help teachers and students decide on a mutually-agreeable plan of study from a variety of excellent options. (Thus a good chance the study will continue to the end.)
One Option offered is the study-guide "Basic Bible: Christ and His Church." This series of ten different courses has the following advantages:
Great breadth and depth to approach the thinking person of today's world in a comprehensive---yet very clear and credible---manner.
Very easy to use in studying key, targeted subject areas of the Bible.
Every section has a series of questions to stimulate and guide lively, enjoyable, and highly-productive discussions.
(Thus an easy-to-use but totally flexible format for teachers, and a defined yet challenging study for students.)
Personal Evangelism is you showing Jesus to another person.
We can personally show Jesus to other people in the following ways:
By conducting ourselves in a Christ-like way in our daily life.
By Christ-like actions directed specifically at the other person.
Through reading and discussing passages in the Bible.
Personal Evangelism is the main way in which people are converted to Christianity. Without a strong personal evangelism program your congregation can expect only an occasional baptism. It is likely your congregation will not grow, and may indeed shrink. In today's world---the same as in the first century---people need to see Jesus to be convinced that this is the true and best way to live their life in this world, and that Jesus is the true and living Way to god.
Living a moral and good life is a prerequisite to showing other people Jesus, but that alone rarely influences others to be interested in Christianity. Unselfishly doing good deeds to others will strongly encourage them to listen to our words, but those deeds by themselves engender only a personal relationship with you, not necessarily with Jesus Christ. It is only through sitting down and at length carefully reading and discussing the Bible that people really see Jesus.
Thus a person becomes convicted to Jesus when all of the following steps occur and together support each other:
Unselfish giving of your time and concern to that person adds to the weight of...
your own daily Christian life...
with both of the above confirming and illustrating the teachings and principles of Biblical Christianity...
those teachings not being vague generalities which mean little, but rather a host of specific details assimilated by direct reading from the Bible...
as brought to life by exciting, fun discussion of intriguingly important, interesting Questions.
The best personal evangelism program is not a knock-down, drag-'em-out fight in which we try to convince people that their interpretation of the Bible is wrong and our interpretation of the Bible is right.
The best personal evangelism is where we together open up our one bible, together read what is there, and together think about and discuss the meaning of what we have found.
Thus the teachers and students are together learning from the Bible and from each other.
There is a place for lecture in which the teacher speaks and the student listens.
But the most effective teaching is where the teacher guides the student to verbally think-out the situation his-or-herself.
When the student hears the words from his or her own lips, it has 100-fold the meaningfulness of passively listening to someone's lecture.
The best personal evangelism on a congregational level is back-up and supported by the following:
A comfortable, well-maintained building to meet in for public worship services.
Excellent public worship services and group Bible classes.
Interesting, meaningful sermons by the minister.
Friendly, supportive, mature members of the Church.
A strong, steady program of Church "social" type fellowship/fun activities.
It all works together:
The social aspects, the public group-meeting aspects, and the personal-interaction aspects.
Successful personal evangelism needs it all.
But the key fundamental element is me directly showing Jesus in the Bible to another person---as backed-up by my unselfish concern for that person as supported by the track-record of my entire life.
Excellent sermons from the preacher are necessary and very important, but can easily be tuned-out or not understood by a person sitting in the audience.
Public group classes are necessary and are very important, but can not deal with each individual's particular needs and concerns of the moment.
Furthermore, many people are not comfortable expressing their deeper concerns and problems in an open, public group meeting.
Deep conviction and conversion to Jesus comes from another person taking the time and trouble to sit with me and helping me see and understand what the Bible is saying.
The best personal evangelism is the most fun thing, the most meaningful thing, that a Christian has ever been involved in.
This happens when you study with a person you like, have good materials and good support for the study, and the person is very interested and equally excited about the study.
Should the student then decide to put on Christ in baptism and continue steadfast in the Christian life, what could be more important or meaningful?
