Helpful Advice on Caring for Reptiles

The Raptors of Jurassic Park---what awesome predators!  Very scary...

Today's reptiles are not quite as fearsome as the Raptors, but still can be awesomely powerful and single-minded.  Witness the huge alligator taking its prey down into the depths of the river; the mighty Komodo Dragons, a twenty foot-long Anaconda!  They still have that Dinosaur mystic!

Why are reptiles so fascinating?  Even people who fear them still acknowledge their beauty, their power, their seeming intelligence.  (Although, as animals go, reptiles are fairly stupid. )

WHY BE FRIENDS WITH A SNAKE...

We can learn a lot from reptiles, especially if they are our friends.  Consider their ADMIRABLE SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS.  A good example is snakes.

Snakes are not the savage attackers that many humans deem them to be.  Indeed, a snake will rarely attack or strike unless it feels it's being attacked and is in imminent danger of being killed!  It's only defending itself!  Often I've gently picked up a wild, nonpoisonous snake (rescuing it most likely from being run-over at the side of a road), and taken it home---and it was as tame and nice from the first day out of the wild as it is years later.  "If you be nice to him, he'll be nice to you!"

Snakes don't play with their food.  They kill it within seconds either from massive poison or from stopping the prey's breathing.  Then, instead of tearing the dead animal into bloody pieces, the snake neatly swallows the entire thing---wasting nothing!  Snakes have no ears, no arms, no legs, and limited vision.  How well could you do under those circumstances?  Yet the ultimate handicapped animal, the snake, does extremely well.

And the colors, patterns, textures are just incredibly beautiful.  Snakes are the ultimate expression of art---fluid motion, which can flow in all directions at the same time!  Amazing.

Learn to UNDERSTAND AND BE FRIENDS with a snake, and you can be friends with any human!   Of course, I'm not talking about poisonous snakes, which only professional experts should get near, try to handle, or keep in captivity.  But there are many nonpoisonous snakes which will not try to bite, in fact will be very friendly---if you are friendly to them!

Note that you can not be gentle and nice to a snake one day, then rough the next.  Snakes don't understand "rough."  They are not a cat or dog, who you can tease or "play" with.  If you are rough to a snake, they only know that something bad is happening and they should try to defend themselves!  To keep the confidence of a snake, you have to be nice and gentle to them every second, all the time!  It only takes one minute of being stupid, of not thinking of the snake's good, of the snake's needs---to lose its confidence!

Handle your pet snake gently, support him, be nice to him, provide him with food/shelter/warmth, and he will respond in kind.  Sure, there are some grouchy snakes you have to be careful around, but most will get very tame quite rapidly.

Reptiles have three main concerns:  to be warm, to be well-fed, and to feel safe.  Sound familiar?  Do we have similar basic concerns, which if violated make us very tense and fearful?

We can learn a lot from reptiles---about ourselves; and about how best to deal with other people!
