How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy

It's like being God.  You can create a whole new world, a whole new time, a whole new Universe.  You form a character and place thoughts in its head, words in its mouth.  Don't like it?  Go back and change things.  It's a real rush!  If you've got an interest in science fiction and/or fantasy---don't just read it, make it!  Yes, like anything, it's work---but it's terrific fun work!  And as a creative exercise that stretches your mind, what could more creative than dreaming up a logical, working, functioning new world!

I started writing my first science fiction novel, "The Mysterious Caves," when I was in the fifth grade.  Even though I didn't publish anything for many years, I kept on writing---finishing several full-length, SF novels before I'd graduated from high school.  Each novel, whether or not it was eventually published, was tremendous fun, a real achievement, and helped me to grow personally.

Orson Scott Card's book is extremely focused , offering interesting examples, useful tips, and valuable guidelines.  He tells you how to build,populate/dramatize a new world, find the right character for the right situation, what not to do, and helpful advice on the business of writing.  The style is not lecturing, rather conversational.  He gives clear, concise strategies for starting with an idea and carrying it through to a completed story.  If you've ever toyed with the idea of getting a taste of Godhood, this is the book for you!

DRACULA, by Bram Stoker

Forget all the cheap knock-offs you've seen in comics, on TV, in the movies.  Bram Stoker's original "DRACULA" is an exquisitely-written thriller that will chill you to your bones.  If you've never read the original book, you've a real treat in store.  This was the book that launched Bram Stoker into world-wide acclaim as an author.  It shocked the world.  It was based in real-world history, set into a vivid, real-world location, and explored the age-old themes of life, death, goodness, and the corrupting nature of ultimate evil: deriving pleasure from the pain of others.  It's a powerful adventure story that crosses late 19th century Europe, with vivid characters locked into a nightmarish struggle: to resist the temptations of something worse than death itself...the seductive appeal of the undead.

FRANKENSTEIN, by Mary Shelley

Again, forget all the cheap knock-offs you've seen on TV, in comics, in the movies.  Mary Shelley's original "Frankenstein" was an incredibly well-written horror/science-fiction book with vivid characters, amazing plot twists, and shattering scenes.  As with Bram Stoker's original "Dracula," this early 19th-century book shocked the world.  It is a story about obsession, where a scientific goal becomes more important than life or family---causing the scientist in question not only to not reach his lofty, well-meaning objectives...but in the process to lose everything dear to him.  It is a terrifying descent into the depths of one's own worst nightmares: where one can not escape the consequences of one's own actions.  Can you cheat death?  Maybe...for a while...  If you've not read this book, prepare to spend a fascinating night not being to put it down tell you've made it---wide-eyed---to the very last word.
